Literacy is a fundamental human right and the foundation for lifelong
learning. It is fully essential to social and human development in its ability
to transform lives. For individuals, families, and societies alike, it is an
instrument of empowerment to improve one’s health, one’s income, and one’s
relationship with the world.
Literacy is the cornerstone of all learning and
fundamental for participation in today’s global society, yet 793 million people
across the globe lack the ability to read and write. If all children in low-income
countries left school with basic reading skills 171 million people could be
lifted out of poverty.
In addition to the basic skills of reading, writing, and arithmetic, it
is equally important that students are given the tools required to take
advantage of the information available to them. The ability to seek, find, and
decipher information can be applied to countless life decisions, whether
financial, medical, educational, or technical.
Literacy includes every medicine bottle,
employment ad and ballot form they encounter.
The uses of literacy for the exchange of knowledge are constantly
evolving, along with advances in technology. From the Internet to text
messaging, the ever-wider availability of communication makes for greater
social and political participation.
Of all the illiterate people in the world today,
two-thirds are female and over 90 percent live in developing countries. A literate community is a dynamic community, one that
exchanges ideas and engages in debate. Illiteracy, however, is an obstacle to a
better quality of life, and can even breed exclusion and violence.
